Species conservation

The National Park Management Department ensures the protection of specially protected, endangered and rare species of plants and animals, following the management plan for the Krkonoše Mountains National Park and its buffer zone. This plan drafts various measures for use particularly in situ (on site where species occur) and ex situ (growing and breeding in captivity, e.g. in gene banks, and so on). As regards selected species of vascular plants, animals and the selected range of native forest woody plants, the department also carries out emergency countermeasures and procedures and ensures updates for red lists of endangered organisms within the mountains.
Furthermore, it manages the wildlife shelter in Vrchlabí, where injured wild birds and mammals are gathered and treated, releasing them whenever possible back into the wild.
