Red Lists

the levels of which are diminishing or at risk for various reasons. The increasing damage suffered by some organisms, the populations of these or even unique communities is something that has harmed the natural world of the Krkonoše Mountains.

The Black and Red List of Vascular Plants of the Krkonoše Mountains was published in 2009, which includes a total of 395 taxa at diverse levels of risk, representing almost 44 % of the natural mountain flora of the region. Similarly grim figures speak of the degree of threat to the national park's fungi, lichens and bryophytes (the red lists of 2006).

As regards the invertebrate fauna of the mountain range, data are only available for certain groups, showing diverse levels of risk for 42 % of ground beetles and 24 % of spiders, both applying merely to known species. Of 457 species of invertebrates placed on the Red List of Animals of the Krkonoše Mountains (1987), 26 species were missing or extinct, one was an endemic species, seven were critically endangered, 37 severely endangered, 127 vulnerable and 259 rare. As regards 210 species of vertebrates studied on the same list, there were over 50 % included in one of the risk categories: eight species were among the extinct, nine and seventeen considered critically endangered or heavily endangered, 40 species were vulnerable and 35 rare.

The numbers of red lists are very alarming, but are entirely necessary for KRNAP Administration in order to decide to which species primary attention should be paid and how or where these should be proactively supported and protected.
