The Ramsar Convention

The ridges of the Krkonoše Mountains contain Nordic peat bogs, which can be found on both sides of the state border. These are considered one of the most treasured features of the natural systems of KRNAP and KPN. It was quite right then that they became the 11th cross-border territory to be added to the list of globally important wetlands under the Ramsar Convention in 2009. Incidentally, the part falling within the Czech Republic was listed as long ago as 1993. To the east, this pertains to the area of Úpské rašeliniště (which lies on both sides of the border), whilst to the west the locations are known as Pančavské rašeliniště and Labská louka; the total area of these on the Czech side of the mountains equals 230 hectares.
