Submontane zone
Situated in the Krkonoše foothills and at the base, between the altitude of 400 and 800 m, this forms 50 % of the total area of the mountains. Initially covered with broad-leaf woodlands and also native mixed mountain forests, common woody species are beech, maple, ash, rowan and alder, but very occasionally fir. Most of these forests were, however, extracted by humans during the process of colonisation and replaced by spruce monocultures or converted into grasslands, pastures and fields, although some remnants are still found in the valleys along rivers and streams.
