Lower alpine (subalpine) zone
This lies at levels above the alpine tree line at altitudes of 1,200–1,450 m, mainly in the high plateaus of the eastern and western portions of the mountains and along the adjacent slopes (9.3 % of the total area of the mountains). In essence it is made up of extensive mountain pine stands, primary or secondary matgrass cover and northern peatlands. Instead of trees, all that can be observed is small or large shrubs, grasses and herbs.
